Mission
To make the biodiversity data and information in Tanzania available openly and freely—primarily via the internet so as to stimulate innovations in scientific research that benefit sustainable socio-economic development.
Funding
The Tanzania Biodiversity Information Facility (TanBIF) is the national node of GBIF. TanBIF is hosted and supported by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) in Dar es Salaam. COSTECH provides office facilities and services including staff, financial management, accountancy and legal support.
History
TanBIF is a National co-ordinating body set up with the overall aim of furthering technical and scientific efforts for sharing of biodiversity data. It comprises a wide range of participants, including national biodiversity research and higher learning institutions, agencies and organisations that intend to provide free and universal access to data and information regarding Tanzania’s biodiversity.
Structure
TanBIF consists of a Governing Board, the Secretariat Host, the Secretariat and the Executive Committee.
