The GBIF Node Awards recognize outstanding achievements by the nodes that serve as the focal point of national and institutional activities within the GBIF network. The programme seeks to amplify the impact and raise the visibility of successful methods and approaches that can inspire emulation by other nodes.

This biennial non-monetary award recognize two categories of achievement:

  • The Excellence Award recognizes the progress made by nodes across critical service areas including support for science and research, policy- and decision-making, community engagement, and technical support for biodiversity data management.
  • The Global Impact Award celebrates novel initiatives that contribute to the broader delivery of GBIF's strategic framework with the potential to benefit the entire GBIF network.

By offering well-deserved recognition of the key contributions that nodes make toward GBIF's mission, the awards aim to strengthen connections between delegations and nodes while offering guiding examples to inspire wider accomplishments across the network.

About the awards

Objectives

  • Showcase the accomplishments of the teams that coordinate GBIF-related activities for participant countries and organizations
  • Provide guiding examples that inspire others in the network
  • Raise the international visibility of nodes' achievements
  • Strengthen connections between participant delegations and nodes

Scope

  • The awards encompass two distinct categories of recognition for Excellence and Global Impact
  • Both awards acknowledging noteworthy achievements made during the preceding two years
  • An expert jury will select one winner for each award but may provide a special commendation for up to two runners-up

Eligibility

  • Nominations for these awards are open to all GBIF nodes, regardless of whether they are Voting or Associate Participants
  • Node managers are eligible and encouraged to self-nominate on behalf of their node team
  • The awards recognize the achievements of whole team working for the node, rather than individual node managers or staff members

Schedule

  • The GBIF Node Awards will be open for nominations every other year in alignment with the biennial Global Nodes Meeting
  • The call for nominations opens in May and June, with the selection process completed in September
  • Winners will be announced during the Global Nodes meeting and subsequent GBIF Governing Board meeting
