Observation.org (2024). Observation.org, Nature data from around the World. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/5nilie accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-01-26.Description
This dataset contains occurrence data of flora and fauna species. From the Netherlands on a 5 x 5 km scale, data from other countries are exact. Observations from Belgium are excluded and can be accessed on GBIF through Natuurpunt and Natagora. It summarizes the observations recorded by >175.000 volunteers.Sampling Description
Quality Control
All records in this dataset have been validated. A record can be validated by either a species expert (1) or by machine (2): 1. Observations accompanied by photo and/or sound files can be looked at by a species expert. The expert will look at the proof provided and approve or reject an observation. They can also ask the observer for more information if necessary. There are several hundreds of species experts connected to the Observation.org platform. Species experts have demonstrable experience in the species group(s) they validate, and become a validator for the platform on invitation or their own initiative. One does not need to be a professional species expert to become a validator on the platform. 2. To help species experts process the enormous amounts of data, Observation.org has automated validation in two ways. Firstly, species experts can set up validation rules for observations without proof for common species. These rules can be very detailed, taking into account information like migration and life stage. For example, species experts could set up automatic approval for observations of the common chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) in the Netherlands in summer, but not in winter. Secondly, the image recognition software Nature Identification API (NIA) supports species experts with validation. When a NIA identification is certain and the observation fits the rules of the automated validation, also observations with photos can be automatically approved.Method steps
- Opportunistic records from the original database of Waarneming.nl and Observation.org. For the Netherlands the records in this dataset present the summed numbers of live individuals per 5 km square. Locations refer to the geographical center points of these squares. Data from other countries are as exact as possible.
